About Londonderry Primary School

Londonderry Primary School was opened in 1969 and is set in a large site, surrounded by grass play areas on the Glenbrook Road, Newtownards.  Over the past 10 years there have been significant extensions made to the school building with a new foundation corridor being completed in 2013 and a new reception, two new P4 classrooms and a brand new computer suite being completed in 2014.

The majority of pupils come from the surrounding area, although a few children come from further afield. The current enrolment is 410.  Modern and spacious accommodation comprises of 14 classrooms, 2 SEN rooms, a resource room for P1 and P2 play, an administration block, Assembly/PE Hall, Meals Kitchen, Dining Hall, an after-schools mobile and a large outdoor area.  Our outdoor area includes two large playgrounds, a newly installed outdoor classroom, a poly tunnel, an orchard, 2 small cabins for play and outdoor seating areas.

Our school operates an Early Morning Club from 7:55am for a small fee.  School is open to all pupils from 8:40am and begins at 9:00am.  Our school also offers After School Care for a small charge available from 2:00pm until 5:00pm Monday to Friday.  We also offer several holiday schemes which pupils can attend during school holidays.

The current staff compliment is Principal and 16 full-time teachers with a wide range of experience in all areas of the curriculum.  There are two classes in each year group and both P1 and P2 classes have their own class assistant.  A well-developed structure of year group teachers and co-ordinators ensures that the NI Curriculum is delivered effectively, and the expertise of the Senior Management Team contributes to the smooth running of the school. This is reflected in our last General Inspection Report, (1994), Focussed Inspection Report (1998) and Short Inspection Report (2009).

The school aims to promote intellectual, physical, moral, cultural and spiritual development in all our pupils, through a commitment to ensure that each child achieves his or her potential. Emphasis is placed on developing competence in the basic skills through confidence and self-esteem.

A high standard of work, self-discipline and personal achievement is expected through close co-operation with our parents. Regular contact, both formal and informal, is encouraged through interviews and our wonderful Parent Teacher Association.

We offer an extensive number of extra-curricular activities which enable our pupils to develop other strengths and develop their amazing talents.  We currently run the following clubs - football, netball, tag rugby, Scripture Union, cricket, hockey, junior and senior choirs, digital technology club, cycling proficiency, cross-country, art, drama and African drumming.  We also offer the following activities in school run by outside agencies including music tuition (guitar, drums, flute and clarinet) and ju-jitsu.

Educational visits are undertaken in each year group to places of local interest and every year residential visits are undertaken by Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils.  Primary 6 pupils go to a nearby outdoor adventure centre for two nights and Primary 7 go to Edinburgh 3/4 nights.

We have a School Council made up of pupils from P4 to P7 as well as an Eco-Council made up of a number of wonderful eco warriors from P3 to P7. In 2019 the Eco-team successfully maintained our Green Flag status.
