About Londonderry Primary School

The
1847
school was opened in 1969 and is set in a large site, surrounded by grass play areas on the Glenbrook Road and convenient to Ards Leisure Centre. There have been significant extensions made to our school building over the past two years. In 2013 work was completed to our new Foundation corridor which is home to four brand new classrooms for P1 and P2 as well as two new Special Educational Needs rooms and a resource room which is shared by the foundation classes. More recently in 2014 work was also completed to the other side of our building which is now home to a new reception and welcome area, two new P4 classrooms and a brand new computer suite.

The majority of pupils come from the surrounding area, although a few children come from further afield. The current enrolment is 390. Modern and spacious accommodation comprises 15 classrooms, administration block, Assembly/PE Hall, Meals Kitchen, Dining Hall and privately-run playgroup within the grounds, pre and after school care is available to working parents. Early morning club operates from 8.00 am and is available to all parents as well as an after schools club which is available from 2:00pm until 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

The current staff entitlement is Principal + 16 full-time and 1 part time teachers with a wide range of experience in all areas of the curriculum. Classroom assistance is provided in most classes. All class bases have Interactive Whiteboards. A well-developed structure of year group teachers and co-ordinators ensures that the NI Curriculum is delivered effectively, and the expertise of the Senior Management Team contributes to the smooth running of the school. This is reflected in our last General Inspection Report, (1994), Focussed Inspection Report (1998) and Short Inspection Report (2009).

The school aims to promote intellectual, physical, moral, cultural and spiritual development in all our pupils, through a commitment to ensure that each child achieves his or her potential. Emphasis is placed on developing competence in the basic skills through confidence and self-esteem.

A high standard of work, self-discipline and personal achievement is expected through close co-operation with our parents. Regular contact, both formal and informal, is encouraged through interviews and the Parent Teacher Association.

Children are encouraged to identify with their school through the wearing of our school uniform, and to return to school to enjoy the social activities organised for them. We are an Extended School and offer a wide and varied range of out of school activities. Have a look on our ‘Extended School’ page and ‘After Schools Club’ page for more details.

Extra-curricular activities enable our children to develop other strength. We offer football, netball, rugby, Scripture Union, cricket, hockey, swimming (P5 and P7), junior and senior choirs, digital technology club, film club, accelerated reading, cycling proficiency, athletics and cross-country. All children from P1 upwards have use of the schools internet. Educational visits are undertaken in each year group to places of local interest and every year visits are undertaken by Primary 6 to a nearby outdoor adventure centre for two nights and Primary 7 to the mainland or Europe for 3/4 nights. Music tuition is also available for violin, flute, cello, clarinet, drums and guitar.

We have more recently also become a Rights Respecting School and have achieved our Level 1 award. We are continuing our work on this and are working towards our Level 2 - see our ‘Rights Respecting School’ page for more details. We also have a School Council made up of pupils from P4 to P7 as well as an Eco-Council made up of a number of wonderful eco warriors from P3 to P7. In 2016 the Eco-team successfully received the Green Flag!
